Description

This 20cm (8”) diameter molcajete follows the traditional three-foot design, with a smooth, angular exterior finish that is more contemporary. Molcajetes from this and other workshops in Teitipac are highly variable, both due to their handmade nature and the variability of the rock.

This molcajete is well-suited to making salsas. Use for grinding spices and the like is not ideal as it has a rough inner texture, and is made from a somewhat porous volcanic rock that is better suited to the quick processing of a tomatoes, chiles, and other salsa ingredients.

This molcajete measures approximately 12cm x 20cm x 20cm (4 ¾in x 8in x 8in).

To prepare your molcajete for use, cleaning it via a seasoning process will help reduce the introduction of grit into your first salsas. Seasoning consists of passing the tejolote (or pestle) around the bowl to remove any high points in the rough inner surface of the bowl. Grinding a bit of raw white rice is a common seasoning technique. The rice forms a white powder, in which flakes of stone are easy to detect.
